Smoking Etiquette

Dear Young Gentleman,

Smoking Etiquette?

A fine question.

  • Smokers:

It is your business that you smoke and no one else’s. You don’t need to bring it up when it is not necessary. Don’t find ways to include it into the story you are telling. When you would like a cigarette, you may excuse yourself and go outside. If you are already outside, ask the other people if they mind if you smoke. If they say no, then you may light up and try to blow your smoke away from them. If they do mind, then you should move away from them.

If someone is not smoking, you should offer. If they say “no,” then you do not need to offer them one ever again. If they say “not now” then you should offer one each time you light up.

  • Non-Smokers:

Smokers are not the equivalent of Nazis so please do not call them out every time they have a cigarette. They know it’s bad for them, so spare them the lecture. Furthermore, you don’t need to make them feel awkward. Rude babbling never aided a smoker in quitting. If the smoke bothers you, you don’t always have to make the smoker go somewhere else, you too can move and be polite. The outside is the smoking section of the 21st century, since they can’t smoke indoors, don’t go and push them out of the outdoors too.

Smoking isn’t for everyone but there are people that smoke. Let them smoke if they want to and if you don’t then you just kindly say no thank you.
